Seit 1909, als die Turnierveranstalter von London-Olympia und San Sebastian fast gleichzeitig die Idee hatten, die bei ihrem Anlass anwesenden Offiziere in einem Mannschaftsspringen nationale Gefühle und Stärken zeigen zu lassen, bildet der Nationenpreis die Hauptprüfung eines CSIO. Man erlebt emotionell-nationales Empfinden bei den Reitern wie bei den Zuschauern.
